These classes will cover all the basics of good oil painting. These are tonal values, mixing and use of colour, good composition, and different techniques of applying paint. These classes are suitable for students at all stages of learning, and new students will be assisted to progress at their own level and pace.
Acrylic Paint Pouring with Gloria Elphinstone: Monday 2.00pm - 4.30pm
Acrylic paint pouring is very addictive, therapeutic and fun to do. I say it’s like a box of chocolates, you do not know what you are going to get until you pour the paint on your canvas. You do not have to be an artist to do these techniques. It is enjoyable for all, from beginners to accomplished artists.
In this class, over a four week period, you will be introduced to dirty cup and ring pour; followed by spatula swipe; string pull; and pour and dip techniques. You will also have a go at painting onto a pre-poured canvas as well as jewellery making. There will be step by step instruction demonstrations followed by you applying the techniques to produce your own creations. No two paintings will be identical.
CREATIVE PAINTING: THE FIGURE AND FACE with FELICITY LOVETT
Learning to see and describe the human form through painting condenses a range of important principles of image making relevant to all artists and art students. The human figure and face are some of the most compelling and meaningful subjects that artists have worked with throughout history and across cultures.
In this fun 6-week painting course, we will explore some core principles around capturing faces and figures in 2-dimensional media and apply this knowledge to a variety of painting styles and techniques. This is not a media-specific course, but one which encourages you to try new approaches to working with your own paints in a supportive community of painters. Each week will involve skill-building exercises and contextual knowledge about portrait and figurative painting before moving into developing your personal projects. We will also have the opportunity work with a live portrait model in the second half of the course.
PAINTING TECHNIQUES AND EXPRESSIONS with TIM PRICE
In this thoroughly engaging and immensely enjoyable six week course we will be alternating between technical classes, where we learn techniques for realistically painting the world, and classes where we engage in exercises where we loosen up and develop our self-expression.
For the technical classes we will look at proportion, colour mark making, and focus on how to paint particular things like water or trees. These classes will involve an initial demonstration, the setting out of a clear and achievable task from which it is easy to build up skills, and further demonstrations to individuals when needed.
For the self-expressive classes we will do a series of quick and easy, fun activities and painting games that are designed to help you to relax and jump into picture making that engages with the nuts and bolts of expression – colour, mark making, composition, tone etc – without having to worry about ‘getting it right’.
JUST ADD WATER – THE FOUR SEASONS
WATERCOLOUR TECHNIQUES AND SKILLS with LYNNE BROWN
Come with me for a spin around the seasons! In this short four-week course we will look at how to use watercolour techniques, colour and composition to convey the different moods of the four seasons.
This course is suitable for both beginners and intermediate students. You will learn the fundamental skills of watercolour painting, and explore a wide range of techniques to add texture and excitement to your work. Each week I will start by demonstrating different techniques and there will be exercises for you to practise them for yourself. We will also cover materials, colour and composition as we go along. You can then continue to experiment with what you have learned, or apply your skills to projects of your own choosing.
This course is a general introduction to working with acrylics and is suitable for absolute beginners. More advanced acrylic students are welcomed and will be challenged to try new techniques as well as consolidating their existing skills. As the course progresses the weekly lessons will provide a set of building blocks to create strong paintings with good composition, contrast and technique.
Some sessions will have a tutor set subject but, in general, students will be encouraged to pursue their own interests in terms of painting subject matter. Additional reference material will be supplied by the tutor each week.
There will be time for one on one tuition and tutor critiques and the class will be encouraged to share their work and engage in constructive critiques.
This term we will again work with watercolour, pastel and acrylics with the emphasis on colour theory, composition and perspective. Attention will be given to techniques and I will work on members’ needs. I will support and guide members working across a wide range of subject matter. Topics and themes can be suggested by class members. I generally begin the lesson with a demonstration then encourage members to work on their own projects and give suggestions and advice as needed.
This course is suitable for beginners and more advanced students.
If you are new, this course will cover all the basics of pastel painting including:
discussion of various brands and types of pastels with the opportunity to try different pastels from the tutor's extensive collection
exploration of different painting mark making techniques
demonstrations of varied subjects by the tutor with opportunity for class requested subjects
exploring various underpainting methods
storage and framing tips and advice
safety in the studio
Continuing students - This term will feature a new format to keep things interesting for continuing students. Each week will focus on an inspiring pastel artist chosen by the tutor. The lesson will explore the artists: individual style; subject matter; specific techniques; and colour palette.
Students will be encouraged to incorporate some of the ideas and techniques in their own work to broaden their understanding of how versatile pastels can be.
