Oil Painting

These classes will cover the basics of good painting. These are tonal values, mixing and the use of colour, good composition, and different techniques of applying paint. These classes are suitable for students of all stages of learning and new students will be assisted to progress at their own level and pace.
Painting Outdoors "en plein air"

Painting outdoors en plein air is about observational response. The adventure of being in the NOW. How it is rendered is up to the individual!
This introductory course is best suited to artists with some prior painting experience who are keen to develop their skills and confidence. Topics covered will include selecting the subject, composition, facing the challenge of changing light, working in difficult weather and working fast etc.
**PLEASE NOTE** Classes will be held outdoors in various locations around Hobart. A reasonable level of fitness and your own transport are essential.
Painting with Friends -
Watercolour

Painting with Friends groups meet together in a supportive environment to continue their art, encouraging and learning from each other. These groups are untutored. Participants share their experiences and enjoy the company of fellow artists in an informal atmosphere. Members are welcome to stay until 4.30pm if a key holder is available to lock up the studio.

Classes will focus on contemporary oil and acrylic painting techniques, encourage students to explore a variety of painting styles, considering ways that colour relationships, texture, form, and perspective can make bold, playful and visually dynamic works.
Classes will cover basic tonal values, colour theory and mixing, and ways different types of paint brushes and painting methods can create different effects. This will involve class discussions, tutor demonstrations, individual production time, and one-to-one time between the tutor and students. Suitable for students at all stages of learning. New students will be assisted to progress at their own level and pace as they develop their own approaches to painting.
Essentials of Realistic Pastel Painting

In this course, you'll explore how to create lifelike textures such as skin, petals, leaves, fur, feathers, and more. Jon will guide you through using hard and soft pastels, focusing on clean layering, colour control, edges, and realistic detail.
Each session includes short demonstrations, guided practice, and personalised one-on-one feedback. You’ll build confidence as you work through small texture studies and finish the course with a completed artwork of your choice—supported step-by-step by Jon’s professional instruction.

Watercolour Techniques and Skills

Suitable for all levels of learning. If you are new to watercolour painting, this course will introduce you to the materials and fundamental skills you need to succeed. If you have some experience, you can build on your skills and increase your repertoire of techniques. In this course you will be learning and using a range of techniques, from the classic to the experimental, that can be applied in different directions including traditional landscapes, detailed studies and more abstract and imaginative work. Along the way we will explore ways to loosen up and inject interest and personality into our work. I will provide demonstrations and individual guidance as we go along.

Portraits in Soft Pastels

This course will cover the basics of animal and human portraits, particularly bringing an image or drawing to life with colour, detail and dimension. You do not need to attempt human portraits if you do not want to.
Portraits will be done from photo references. Animals will include birds, farm animals, reptiles, wildlife, insects and creatures of the sea and ice.
Attendees will be provided with online and in-class demonstrations and mentored in completing their own portraits as part of the course. Participants will be encouraged to develop their own style.
Painting the Seasons in Pastels

This term we’ll be exploring the changing seasons and learning how to use pastels in different ways to recreate the changing light, colours, moods and textures of the seasons.
We’ll cover a variety of subjects and styles so everyone has a chance to paint what they love and try something new. There will be fun exercises to help reinforce learning each lesson and plenty of time to work on subjects of your choice within the broad Seasons theme.
This course is suitable for beginners and more advanced students. Basics for beginners will be incorporated into the lessons as well as opportunities for more advanced students to stretch themselves and continue to develop their own style.

Printing and Gelli Printing with Friends

Printing with Friends runs as an informal untutored group that meets together on Friday afternoons on an ad hoc basis for printmaking. Use your own printmaking methods, techniques and materials, including the printing press if required and authorised. Participants learn from each other, share their experiences and enjoy the company of fellow artists in an informal atmosphere.

Watercolour Flora and Fauna

Over four classes, we will learn how to blend realism with abstraction to create paintings that are filled with light and atmosphere. Using the themes of flora and fauna, Leanne will help you build confidence with your watercolours by learning how to use colour, composition and different watercolour techniques to create expressive watercolour paintings. Each session will include a short demo, one-on-one tuition and guided practice. New students will be assisted so they can progress at their own pace and develop their own unique way of painting in this wonderful medium.
