These classes will cover the basics of good painting. These are tonal values, mixing and the use of colour, good composition, and different techniques of applying paint.  These  classes are suitable for students of all stages of learning and new students will be assisted to progress at their own level and pace.

Watercolour for Beginners

Do you find the idea of painting in watercolour daunting and you don't know where to start? This course is for you! This course is for beginners in watercolour painting, or for those who are returning to watercolour and want a refresher. Leanne will gently guide you through the basics of working with watercolour and help you build your confidence.

This course is suitable for people with some experience in watercolour painting. In this course we will be looking at a variety of subjects including still life, wildlife and the landscape. Along with traditional painting techniques, we will explore some exciting and non-traditional approaches that will introduce you to the wider possibilities of watercolour. Each week I will demonstrate new subjects and techniques for you to try, provide a great range of reference materials to inspire you, and give you guidance and support as you paint your own works.

Painting with Friends -All Media
Tuesdays 1.30 pm to 3:30 pm
(2 hour sessions)

Painting with Friends groups meet together in a supportive environment to continue their art, encouraging and learning from each other.  These groups are untutored.  Participants share their experiences and enjoy the company of fellow artists in an informal atmosphere. Members are welcome to stay until 4.30pm if a key holder is available to lock up the studio.

 

Painting Contemporary Landscapes in Oils or Acrylics
with FIONA VERDOUW

Learn how to paint contemporary representational landscapes in oils or acrylics. (Students should come prepared to use their preferred and practiced medium)

From bush scenes to beachscapes, this 4 week course offers those familiar with the basics of painting a chance to get to grips with creating landscapes in a fresh way. Learn how colours, shapes and tones can be used to bring depth, light and movement into a scene - using a minimal palette of colours and just the essential tools and equipment.

Using reference photos, we will explore a different type of landscape each week, and focus on how to paint the major elements in a vibrant, painterly way.

Featuring live tutor demonstrations, a splash of colour theory and plenty of time to paint with guidance close-by.

Drawing for Beginners

This general drawing course will suit the absolute beginner or anyone wanting to refresh their basic drawing skills.

The main aim of these classes is to enable beginners to learn to observe carefully and draw reasonably accurately. Exercises, demonstrations and discussions will form part of each class.  By the end of this course for beginners, you should have:

  • learned how to observe objects for drawing

  • practised hand-eye coordination

  • a general understanding of form and structure to simplify your drawings

  • developed practical knowledge of different drawing techniques

Mixed Media
with MEL HILLS

Come join Mel for a four week media exploration and discovery session.

Don your lab coats/ art smocks and prepare to get messy and have lots of fun as we enhance our knowledge of how materials interact and combine.

Extend your arts practice and utilise new techniques, skills and combinations to create your own unique and individual artworks.

 We will investigate ways to combine media to enhance compositions with texture, depth and form using alchemy instead of elbowgrease.

The recommended format will be postcard sized papers so they can be stuck in an experimentation journal easily and labelled for later reference.

Painting with Friends - Mixed Media

Painting Portraits in OILS
with ZANE YASUDA

This course is suitable for intermediate students who wish to build upon their portrait painting techniques.  Emphasis will be on using the traditional old master’s approach that is now taught in the Florence Academy in Italy.  Drawing will not be a focus.

The aim of the 8 week course is to work simultaneously on 3 portraits that you have chosen to do from photographic images.  We will be working on MDF board using a very limited palette.  A detailed list of materials will be sent to participants at a later date.

Pastel Painting
with LINDY WHITTON

This course is suitable for beginners and more advanced students.

Soft pastels have an amazing range of colours from bright, saturated colours to soft neutrals and deep darks. This term we’ll be exploring how to make the most of our existing pastel sets by unleashing our inner artist through some fun exercises, colour layering and colour experiments.There will be an emphasis on creating strong paintings through developing observational skills, understanding composition, using dynamic contrast, becoming comfortable with tonal values, using colour effectively and introducing texture.
